WHO ARE THE STARS?

The Stars Swim Team is a recreational youth summer swim team that competes in the Northwest Aquatic League. The Stars is composed of swimmers ages 4 through 18 that reside in residential neighborhoods and apartments within the boundaries of Jersey Village High School.

Swimmers on the team range from novice and inexperienced (but comfortable swimming in the pool unassisted) to advanced swimmers who also compete for a year round USA Swimming club and/or their high school swim team.

WHY SHOULD MY CHILDREN JOIN SWIM TEAM?

Any child can be a swimmer. The only prerequisite is that the child can do the following unassisted: (1) jump into the pool; (2) move around in water; and (4) get out of the water. Any child with the desire to work hard, learn, and have fun can be great swimmers! Swimming using proper technique is an important life skill that is the best method of cardiovascular exercise anyone can get.  Swimming five days a week is excellent for your children's fitness level. Both swim practices and swim meets are great sporting events where your swimmer will discover significant improvements in both swimming form and times.  Swim practices and swim meets are also fantastic social events for your child and yourself. You and your family will make new friends and get to know other friends more. Finally, as your child improves over the season, you will see your swimmer's self-esteem grow!

DOES THE STARS SWIM TEAM OFFER SWIM LESSONS?

No! This is swim team not swim lessons! The Stars Swim Team's swimmers must be comfortable entering, staying afloat, moving themselves in the pool and exiting the pool without assistance from anyone. To be on swim team, your child needs to do the following without assistance from anyone: (a) jump into the pool; (b) move around in the pool unassisted by any person, floating device, swim ropes or pool walls; and (c) get out of the pool.  If your child is unable to do these three items unassisted, then swim lessons (not swim team) is what your child needs.

Practices consist of swimmers spending 30 minutes to an hour in the pool swimming laps to develop and refine their swim strokes while under the guidance of our coaches. Swim meets consist of competitive races in which each swimmer must successfully swim one or more lengths of the pool using one of the four competitive swim strokes, freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.

WHEN IS THE SWIM SEASON?

Registration for the Stars Swim Team opens on March 1. Practices start in mid-April. Swim meets start in early May and run through late-June, when qualified swimmers compete in invitational swim meets.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE SWIM PRACTICES?

During the swim season, practices are Monday through Friday at the Rolling Fork pool located at 9110 Rodney Ray Blvd., Houston, Texas 77040. Before the end of the school year, practices are in the evenings with start times ranging (depending on age) from 4 - 7:30 pm.  After the end of the school year, practices are in the morning with start times ranging (depending on age) from 6:30 - 9:00 am.  

The Stars Swim Team understands that families are busy and kids have academic events and participate in other extracurricular activities. Perfect attendance at practices is not required but we do encourage each swimmer to attend as many practices as possible. As with all things, practice leads to improvement.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE SWIM MEETS?

Swim meets are on Saturdays beginning in early to mid-May and occur on seven consecutive Saturdays. The meets are either at the Rolling Fork Pool or at the Stars Swim Team’s opponent’s pool.

The Stars Swim Team participate in the Northwest Aquatic League and the Stars Swim Team's opponents are also neighborhood recreational summer swim teams.  For the 2025 season, the Stars Swim Team will swim against the Copperfield Dolphins, Deerfield Village Dolphins, Lakes on Eldridge Dolphins, Windsong Wavebreakers and Wortham Whitesharks.

ARE THERE INVITATIONAL SWIM MEETS?

Yes. Invitational swim meets are swim meets in which a maximum time is set. Only those swimmers that swim an event equal to or faster than the maximum time can be entered into the Invitational Swim Meet. The Stars Swim Team strongly encourage those swimmers that qualify for Invitational Swim Meets to enter and compete in those meets, which occur during and after the regular swim season. Additional fees are required for entering invitational swim meets.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE STARS SWIM TEAM?

The Stars Swim Team provide its participants an opportunity to be on a competitive, recreational and community swim team. The goals of the Stars is for each swimmer to: (1) progress in their own swimming ability; (2) meet and develop new and lasting friendships with their teammates and (3) have fun!

The Stars Swim Team are managed by a group of volunteer parents who have a child/legal guardian on the team. The current Stars Swim Team board consist of:

I HAVE HEARD I NEED TO VOLUNTEER AT SWIM MEETS, IS THAT TRUE?

Yes! For a swim meet to run efficiently, you need more than 100 parent volunteers. As part of each family's registration and fees, we require each family to complete a set number of volunteer sessions each season. A volunteer session is 1/2 of a swim meet. There are numerous volunteer jobs such as timers and scribes, ready bench, concessions, meet officials, meet set-up and tear-down, ribbons and runners. There is at least one job that you can complete. You are going to be at the swim meet anyways. Might as well do something helpful while you are there.

Still not convinced? That is fine, you will pay the Volunteer Opt-Out fee set by the board. The Stars Swim Team will be more than happy to take your money!
